BEACHSIDE
2023

Located in Manhattan Beach, only a mile inland from the California coast line, this front yard garden is an ode to the cliffside found on riparian boarders. The plant material forms are intersecting swaths of jaggedness, pulsing with colored flowers and strokes of wispy lines. The clients sought a solution to warm up the front facade and provide interest both from the street and the interior of the house. In true beach style, a cantilevered board walk was implemented into the design to facilitate the gradual elevation change from the sidewalk to the front stoop as the home sits lower than the street. The addition of the small sized boulders aIso brought an essence of the oceanside to the house, reflecting the juxtaposition of the softness of plant material with solid rock faces of the ocean cliffs indigenous to the California coast. The garden boasts seasonal interest, with plants showcasing blooms at different times of year.
