URBAN INFILL

New construction litters the SW Portland neighborhood of Multnomah Village where craftsman bungalows once sat comfortably on the
50 x 100 lots.  Three story residences now leave little space and give even less consideration for how new homeowners will use their limited outdoor space.

A family of three finally felt the need to transform a cramped, unusable hillside into a functional space where they could play with their young daugther and entertain on long summer nights. We decided to carve a series of terraces into the hillside, creating space for usable patios and a small lawn. To make the 875sqft space comfortable, lush planting was used to create visual breaks between rooms and define a sense of place. A mix of native understories and adaptive broadleaf evergreens will attract fauna and invite the young family to grow alongside the property.

Ultimately, the initial conceptual design was scaled back to fit within the client's budget. Even so, the construction of the project intrigued  Aaron, so he offered to undertake the 7 week endeavor himself, including masonry and carpentry. Specimen plants were sourced from local growers as well as Aaron & Hadiza's test garden west of Portland.
